What is ADAS — and why does it need calibrating?
Most cars built in the last few years have a small camera mounted behind the windscreen, up near the rear-view mirror. It’s the eyes for your car’s driver-assist features — lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning. Together, these are called ADAS: advanced driver assistance systems.
Recalibration is the process of re-aiming it: using targets, measurements, and diagnostic equipment to teach the camera exactly where “straight ahead” is again.
When do you need recalibration?
You’ll need a recalibration if…
- Your windscreen has been replaced — this is the big one. Any windscreen replacement on a car with a camera means recalibration. No exceptions.
- There’s a warning light on your dash — an ADAS, lane-assist, or camera fault light means the system needs checking.
- Your safety features are acting odd — lane-keep pulling when it shouldn’t, cruise control braking late, warnings firing at nothing.
- After an accident or repair — panel work, a new bumper with sensors, or suspension changes can all knock things out of line.
- Your mirror or camera has been bumped or removed — even a hard knock to the mount can shift the aim.

Recalibration questions, answered
Yes — if your car has a camera behind the windscreen, recalibration after replacement isn’t optional. The camera’s aim is set relative to the glass, and replacing it shifts that reference point. Without recalibration, safety features like lane-keep assist and emergency braking can read the road wrong.
If your car was built from around 2018 on, it very likely does. Look for a camera unit behind the rear-view mirror, or features like lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, or auto emergency braking. Or just send us your rego — we’ll tell you in a minute.
Usually 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the car. If we’re replacing your windscreen too, it’s all done in the same visit — you don’t come back twice.
Your safety systems keep running on bad information. They won’t warn you they’re off — lane-keep can steer at the wrong moment and emergency braking can misjudge distance, and you’d only find out when it matters most. It can also affect your insurance position if the car’s safety systems weren’t restored to spec after repair.
Yes — when it’s part of a windscreen claim, recalibration is a required part of the repair, and insurers cover it as part of the job. We lodge it all together on your behalf.
No — it needs certification, the right diagnostic equipment, and the manufacturer’s calibration targets. It’s worth asking whoever quotes you whether recalibration is included and who’s actually doing it. We’re certified and do it in-house, in the same visit.
Not always — and that’s the trap. A dash light means it definitely needs attention, but a camera can be aimed wrong without triggering any warning at all. After any windscreen replacement, recalibration is the only way to know it’s right.
